Our Nursery Day
I have included some photos and videos of our visual timetable showing our daily routines in nursery.
Routines are very important for young children. It gives them a sense of security and control over their environment. Children know what is expected of them and what will be happening next.
Last year all the children had together time as a class, they all played inside together and went outside together. However, following the guidelines this year and with the restrictions placed upon us, we have been advised to divide the class into smaller groups for most of the day which is why we are operating two groups.
The main thing for children to remember is that if they get a band they will be having together time with Mrs Kaestner, going outside first and then later on they will be playing inside and having snack before going home.
If children don’t get a band in the morning they will be having good morning time with Mrs Mcmahon, playing inside and having snack first before they go outside. Then after outside time it will be together time with Mrs Kaestner and then home time.
Mrs Kaestner will always be conducting together time with the children and Mrs Mcmahon and Mrs Kaestner will both swap around the groups of children.
We use a variety of methods to give children warning that a transition or change is taking place such as clapping a rhythm which I then get the children to clap back to me. We also use the sand timer as a visual to show the children how long they have before it will be time to start tidying or to move indoors or outdoors. We use music and songs as well to help the children follow the transitional routines.
Visual schedules can be a great tool to use with children especially if you find it hard to get them to bed at night time are even up in the morning and ready for school. You can find lots of examples of these on Google which you can personalise.
Lining up can be a great opportunity for learning certain concepts such as order of who is first, second, third and last in the line; and prepositions of in front of and behind. You could have fun practising this with family members or with toys.
